Shadow Stag
Shadow Stag
3" × 3" hand-painted shadow box
He died with his weapons drawn. This male stag beetle (Lucanidae) sits in permanent defense posture—mandibles spread wide, ready to wrestle rivals or ward off whatever comes next. The moonstone skull keeps watch from the synthetic moss, glowing opalescent in low light like a guardian spirit that’s seen too many battles.
Housed in a 3-inch square hand-painted wooden box (black, obviously, with enough texture to suggest weather), this piece captures the contradiction of violence and peace. The beetle is the real deal—ethically sourced, naturally deceased—but the terrain is pure fabrication: synthetic moss that never wilts, a crystal skull that never judges, and paint that chips just enough to look storied.
Materials: Naturally deceased stag beetle (male, mandibles spread), moonstone crystal skull, synthetic moss bedding, hand-painted wooden shadow box with glass lid, archival mounting.
Dimensions: 3" H × 3" W × 2" D (approximate).
Care:
- Keep dry—moisture is the enemy
- Display away from direct sunlight (moonstone fades, specimens bleach, and the paint prefers mystery)
- Handle box by edges only; those mandibles are sharp and fragile
- Not a toy for children or cats with poor impulse control
- If dust settles on the moss, use a dry cotton swab—never liquid cleaners
